Dong Ho RestaurantDinning Out Vietnamese StyleDong Ho is one of those typical open-air dinning establishments around Saigon that are half restaurant and half coffee shop. Dong Ho Restaurant Entrance - SaigonLocated in District 10, Dong Ho Restaurant is centered around a lake, the word Ho meaning lake in Vietnamese. On one side of this lake is a restaurant, which is usually filled with family groups, or groups of business men enjoying an evening meal after a hard days work. This is where you will hear the choruses of "Mot, Hai, Ba Yo!" which means "One, Two, Three Cheers!" in Vietnamese. On the other side of the lake is the coffee shop. With its subdued lighting and little hidey holes, this is where the couples go in the evenings to whisper sweet nothings and relax in some relative peace and quiet. The best thing is that the restaurant is only about a 20 minute taxi ride from the tourist area in District 1. Lake View - Dong Ho RestaurantBecause of this convenience I often visit Dong Ho Restaurant with my girlfriend. It is where we go when we want to have a little celebration or eat a nice Vietnamese meal without the formality of more pretentious restaurants. And while at times it can be a little busy, the surrounding trees and shrubs block out much of the noise from the street noise or other customers. Not to mention that the trees and placid lake give the whole dinning experience a sense of peacefulness and detachment from the busy city life outside. The food here is not half bad either, and whenever I visit I always make sure to order my favorites. Chicken Fried In Fish Sauce - Dong Ho RestaurantThat is, I always order the 'Com Chien Duong Chau' (Fried Rice), ' Bo Cuom Pho Mai' (Grilled Beef With Cheese), 'Canh Ga Chien Nuoc Mam' (Chicken Fried In Fish Sauce) and 'Goi Ngo Sen Tom Thit' (Vegetables and Shrimp). I love the chicken fried in fish sauce and chili, it is one of my favorite all-time Vietnamese dishes. I love how when you first bite into the chicken your taste senses are hit by the sweetness of the fish sauce, but just as you are about to finish the little parcel of chicken, the chili kicks-in and leaves your mouth with a warm flourish at the end. The dish is especially nice if you dip it in the lemon, pepper and salt seasoning that comes with the meal. If you are looking for laid-back Vietnamese dining definitely worth a visit, and make sure to try the fired chicken in fish sauce. 195-197 Cao Thang, District 10 |
